Information About Museum Careers
Though a foundation in art or art history is helpful, it is not required for every position in an art museum. However, curatorial positions do demand completion of a graduate degree at minimum, and the heightened focus and expertise gained through doctoral study is often preferred.
Departments in which defined skills and knowledge are necessary, but do not require a formal background in art history, include: construction, installations, finance, information services, audio-visual services, administrative services, admissions, and inventory control and distribution for retail operations.
We encourage you to browse our listings, which are updated approximately every two weeks.
When you apply for a specific position, your material is kept on file for one year. If you have sent your material for general consideration, it will be kept on file for six months from the date it was received. We will contact you if an interview is considered appropriate. Due to the volume of mail received, we are unable to respond to telephone inquiries regarding application status.
